This lesson was so embarrassing...

Hey Reader,

Confession time: the first time I taught odd and even numbers, I reached for toilet paper… to count the squares.

(Yes, really. 💀)

Because no matter how “easy” it seemed, I had no idea how to explain it. It felt intuitive, but I couldn’t break it down.

I thought TP would be a great way, but boy oh boy, in a matter of minutes all my students looked like toilet paper brides.

So I built a better way—hands-on, visual, and rooted in number sense (not just lucky guesses).

🎥 In today’s new video, I’m walking you through:

✔️ The game I use every year to introduce odd/even

✔️ Why writing about math actually works

✔️ How I tie this standard to multiplication and arrays

✔️ The hilarious read-aloud that makes it all stick

Let’s teach this the way it should be taught: with confidence, creativity, and zero worksheets.

Wishing you the best,

Sarah Barnett

Reader I’ll never forget the day we invited every family—and the local news—to our big STEM rocket launch picnic. We had hot dogs, we had excitement, and we had 100+ spectators ready to cheer. Except... every single one of our bottle rockets failed. Every. Last. One. And whose fault was it? 👋🏻 Mine. Standing there, red-faced and deflated, I had a choice. I could panic... or pivot. So I stepped forward and told my students, “We’ve made a great mistake today.” We laughed, launched a spare...
